Discussion centered on this past weekends stamp show held at the Comfort Inn in Prospect Heights. Attendance was steady on Saturday, and Sunday saw a fair number of folks bringing in stamp collections for appraisal, in response to an offer of $25 to do so. It was observed that there was one collection that was charged the $25, because of its value. Nearly all the collections were from relatives that had passed away, and handed down to family members. Most were common stamps that held little interest or value to the dealers at the show. Since the club has used up the items that had been donated for meeting "door prizes", the club will now give "stamp bucks" worth $3 as door prize gifts, one at Schaumburg and two at Arlington Heights meetings. The stamp bucks are only good for items at auctions, not for dues or other club functions like the holiday party.

There is concern about the arrangements for meetings at Schaumburg, as a group must register on-line, and then only for a three-month window. Aroon said he has had success in scheduling other meetings with another group by working with Barbara Knowland, and indicated he would talk to her to see what could be done.

On registering with the Government, we are registered with the state as a non-profit organization, and we accept no donations that would be considered tax-deductible.

Dan reported that the donated door prizes have been distributed, and the club is considering a $3.00 credit certificate as a door prize to be used for purchases at club auctions.

There was also discussion about non-current members participating in club auctions. The suggestion was to use proceeds from the sale of auctioned items of that current non-member to be applied toward membership dues, before returning the proceeds to the individual. There are no meetings scheduled for April, and three in May.
The following question was asked: What is a silent auction? In Rockford, the club puts out 100 lots on each of the two days. Members and attendees can bid up till 2:00 when the successful high bidder is announced. Rockford also offers a door prize that attendees must purchase a ticket to qualify for.

One guest, Marge was in attendance. She was seeking suggestions on what to do with the stamp collection she inherited from her father.

January 12, 2009 Schaumburg

Eight members braved the snowy evening including Arund who had previously missed several meetings due to surgery. Welcome back Arund. Jerry called the meeting at 8:15. Al read the tresurer's report. Gary read the minutes. Jerry, once again, expressed his thanks to Dan & Sue for their efforts with the Holiday Party at the Old Country Buffet in December. Jerry questioned whether or not anyone knew who presented himself, Dan, Jon & Al with the "Sweet Million" gift (chocolate bar wrapped in paper denoting a million dollars) at the last meeting. No one confessed. For new business, Dan suggested that we collect email addresses and phone numbers for members in the event that we cancel meetings. With several snow storms over the last few weeks it may make sense to cancel meetings in the event of bad weather. Jerry suggested that we bring up the point at the next Arlington meeting.

December 29, 2008 Arlington Heights

The highlight of the evening was the annual Holiday Donation Auction with numerous lots ranging from cigar box lots to partial collections. Proceeds were donated to the Arliongton Heights and Schauburg libraries for their support of the club during the year. Refreshments and snacks fueled the bidding. Thank you to those bringing in the refreshments.

December 17, 2008 Old Country Buffet Holiday Party

34 club members and guests enjoyed an evening dinner at the Old Country Buffet on Wednesday evening. Somehow we managed to schedule it in between two snow storms that hit the night before and the night after. All enjoyed each other's company chatting about stamp collecting, the holidays, family and why each of us has not moved to Florida in order to avoid the Chicago winters. Dan and his wife, Sue, provided gift bags for all. A raffle was held and each of the attendees went home with a least one additional gift. A HUGE THANK YOU, Dan & Sue!!!! It was announced that the Elk Grove Village attendance was low the last couple of meetings so the winter meetings are being suspended for the time being. Jon Krause was honored for his dedicated efforts in the club over the years with a life-time membership. CONGRATULATIONS Jon!

December 9, 2008 Schaumburg

Six die-hard stamp collectors successfuly made it to the Schaumburg Library in snowy weather. The meeting was not held but we sat in the coffee shop before braving the elements once again to get home.

November 11, 2008 Schaumburg

Jerry called the business meeting at 8:00. 10 members were present on a cold and rainy evening. The secretary was not in attendance so the minutes from the previous meeting were not read. Al presented the Treasurers report. Jerry discussed the Elk Grove Village afternoon meetings as successful and indicated a continuation into 2009. Gary reported that the web site project was underway. The URL for the site is northweststampclub.org. Dan reminded members of the club about the Holiday Party at the Old Country Buffet on December 17th. 17 members have signed up so far. Also coming up in the near future are the "Donation Auctions" were the proceeds will be given to the respective libraries in appreciation of services received throughout the year. Steve motioned to adjourn the business meeting at 8:20. Discussion was held regarding the value of a single stamp extracted from a souvenir sheet. Some felt the value should be the same as the sheet, other felt there should be a 50% reduction in the value as the single is no longer part of the sheet. Jim questioned where he could find a catalog listing of Italian stamps with Polish overprints; Steve suggested Michel. Bob posed a question regarding US booklets; when there are two or more pages; how do you display in your album. Some buy two booklets; one to keep intact; the other to unfold. Some preferred not to collect the booklet because of the expenditure of more than one stamp. Stamp and cover trading was conducted before and throughout the meeting. Gary brought the Chicagopex display pages for all members to view.
